There are many ways to define the term dystopia, but John Joseph Adams' description in his blog post Dystopian Fiction: An Introduction is spot on. He describes dystopia as an unfavorable society, the term coming from the Ancient Greek roots dys- and-topia, which mean "bad" and "place to live" respectively. Dystopia is the antithesis of Utopia.
"In a dystopian story, society itself is typically the antagonist; it is society that is actively working against
the protagonist’s aims and desires. This oppression frequently is enacted by a totalitarian or
authoritarian government, resulting in the loss of civil liberties and untenable living conditions, caused by
any number of circumstances, such as world overpopulation, laws controlling a person’s sexual or
reproductive freedom, and living under constant surveillance" (Adams, 2011).
Since dystopian lit is so popular, here is a list of some of the dystopias we have here in the NHS library. (Unless otherwise noted, summaries are from GoodReads.com.) Where possible, I've included a link to a book trailer.

Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive.
